Lighting Technology Made Easy

Lighting technology is amazing today, but can be confusing, so let’s simplify! You need a cool color and a warm color temperature for lights in closets. Well, that simplifies it! Color temperature is a way that the industry describes the appearance of light. It is measured by Kelvin (K) on a scale of 1,000 to 10,000, with warmer color in the lower range and cooler light in the higher range.  A light source which is closer in color temperature to daylight is going to be in the 4000K-5000K range (often used in offices, but not really kind to us) like daylight. If you are going out at night or into an indoor event you will more likely be in warmer lighting, which would be more like 2200-2700K, sometimes even 3000K. You really need to watch the CRI listing because you want 90 or higher to get the ideal color quality.

The Latest in Closet Lighting

The great new product on the market now is a linear LED mounted above the hanging rods which lets you adjust the color temperature from 2200K to 5000K. If your budget doesn’t allow for this, put a 4000K linear bulb above the clothing with some 2700K incandescent bulbs or an LED light on the ceiling; just keep them on separate switches.  With triangular trim, you can mount the linear lighting along the front edge of the shelf, throwing the light toward the back at a 45 degree angle.  Also, there are now some hanging rods available with the LED built into them!  However, if you only have one lighting source, go for the 3000K instead.
